The village of Abu Simbel is renowned for its two grand temples, the Great Temple of Ramses II and the smaller Temple of Hathor. Located in Nubia, southern Egypt, on the western bank of Lake Nasser, approximately 230 km southwest of Aswan, these imposing rock temples have a fascinating history.

Both temples form part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the “Nubian Monuments,” extending from Abu Simbel downriver to Philae near Aswan. Carved into the mountainside during the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses II in the 13th century BC, they were intended as a lasting monument to the pharaoh himself and his queen, Nefertari. The temples also served to commemorate Ramesses II’s alleged triumph at the Battle of Kadesh and to instill awe in neighboring Nubian territories.

In 1968, due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam on the Nile River, the entire complex was relocated to an artificial hill created from a domed structure high above the reservoir of the Aswan High Dam. This relocation was necessary to prevent the temples from being submerged by the formation of Lake Nasser, a vast artificial water reservoir. Despite the move, Abu Simbel continues to captivate visitors and remains one of Egypt’s top tourist attractions.

With the assistance of a qualified Egyptologist as your guide, you’ll enjoy a personalized and informative visit to the temples of Abu Simbel, featuring four rock-hewn pharaohs. Your journey to the site will be in the comfort of an air-conditioned vehicle exclusively for you and your travel companion. Your guide will recount the fascinating history of this magnificent site, including the accidental discovery of the temples in 1813.

Please note that due to the large number of visitors, guides are not allowed to accompany you inside the two temples you will explore. However, your Egyptologist guide will provide extensive insights and explanations outside the temples.

After the conclusion of your enriching tour, you’ll be comfortably taken back to your hotel, where you can reflect on the extraordinary experience of visiting the awe-inspiring temples of Abu Simbel.
